“That’s Nonsense!” – Jamie Carragher Blasts Arteta Over Champions League Claim

“That’s Nonsense!” – Jamie Carragher Blasts Arteta Over Champions League Claim

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has publicly slammed Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for claiming the Gunners were the better side across both legs of their Champions League semi-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsenal were knocked out of the competition after losing 2-1 in the second leg at the Parc des Princes, with PSG progressing to the final 3-1 on aggregate. But in his post-match reaction, Arteta boldly claimed Arsenal had been the better side across the two legs—a comment that didn’t sit well with Carragher.

“When a manager speaks straight after the game he is obviously still emotional,” Carragher said on CBS Sports.

“I have seen another interview where he said he feels Arsenal have been the best team in the Champions League this season on what they have done. That is nonsense, they are not.

“He said something similar the other day about Liverpool’s points tally. He’s just an emotional manager at the moment.”

💬 OPINION: Arteta’s Comments—Confidence or Just Emotional Spin?

Arteta has never been shy to defend his team, but calling Arsenal the “better team” after a clear aggregate defeat raises eyebrows. While it’s natural for managers to support their squad—especially after such a bitter exit—claims like this can easily appear delusional, especially when the result and performance tell a different story.

Carragher’s criticism, although sharp, reflects the frustration of fans and pundits who value honesty and self-awareness in defeat. Emotion is part of the game—but the best managers often know when to own up, rather than talk up.

Arsenal’s UCL campaign was impressive, but if they want to truly dominate Europe, introspection, not excuses, might be the better fuel.

What do you think—Was Arteta defending his squad or dodging the truth?
