Flamingos Crush Guinea 6-0 to Secure FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifying Progress

Flamingos Crush Guinea 6-0 to Secure FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifying Progress

Nigeria's U-17 women's team, the Flamingos, delivered another dominant performance on Sunday, thrashing Guinea 6-0 in the second leg of their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup qualifying fixture at Ikenne.

The emphatic victory sealed an overwhelming 11-0 aggregate triumph for the young Nigerians, who once again demonstrated their superiority over their West African rivals.

The Flamingos wasted little time asserting their dominance as Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the ninth minute, setting the tone for another one-sided encounter.

Captain Harmony Chidi, who had already grabbed a hat-trick in the first leg, doubled Nigeria's advantage in the 21st minute to continue her impressive goalscoring form.

Just two minutes later, Queen Joseph added a third goal, putting the tie beyond any doubt.

Adegbuyi then completed her brace shortly before the half-hour mark, while Chidi struck again in the 34th minute after being set up by Adegbuyi, giving the hosts a commanding 5-0 lead before halftime.

Although the pace slowed after the break, Nigeria maintained control of the match and added a sixth goal through Precious Oscar, who rounded off an outstanding team display.

Flamingos Continue Their Impressive Rise

The result underlines the strength of coach Akeem Busari's squad as they continue their journey towards qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

Scoring 11 goals across two legs while keeping a clean sheet highlights both the attacking quality and defensive discipline that have become hallmarks of the team.

Opinion: Flamingos Showing Why Nigeria Remains a Youth Football Powerhouse

Performances like this serve as a reminder of Nigeria's long-standing reputation for producing talented young footballers, particularly in women's football.

While the scoreline reflects a significant gap in quality between the two sides, the Flamingos deserve credit for maintaining their intensity and professionalism throughout both legs. Too often, teams ease off when qualification appears certain, but Nigeria continued to play with purpose and confidence.

The partnership between Adegbuyi and Chidi was especially encouraging, with both players combining effectively and contributing goals. Such chemistry could prove crucial as the competition becomes more demanding in the later stages of qualification.

Of course, sterner tests lie ahead. Dominating Guinea is one thing; competing against the strongest youth teams on the continent and eventually the world stage is another challenge entirely. However, the manner of this victory suggests the Flamingos possess the talent and mentality required to aim high.

For now, Nigeria can celebrate another convincing performance, but the bigger objective remains securing a place at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup and continuing the country's proud tradition of success in youth football.
