Busari Confident Flamingos Will Secure U-17 Women’s World Cup Ticket

Busari Confident Flamingos Will Secure U-17 Women’s World Cup Ticket

Flamingos head coach Akeem Busari has expressed confidence that his side will book a place at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as they prepare to face the Benin Republic in the final qualifying round.

Nigeria will host the first leg at the Remo Stars Stadium on Saturday, while the return leg is scheduled for next weekend at the Stade de Kegue.

The Flamingos head into the decisive tie in high spirits after cruising past Guinea with an emphatic 11-0 aggregate victory in the previous qualifying round.

Despite Nigeria's pedigree at youth level, Busari expects a difficult contest against their West African neighbours.

“Everybody really wants to be part of the competition proper, and Nigeria being a consistent contender, it’s going to be a tough game.

“I believe they are prepared, and we are prepared as well. The 90 minutes here is going to be very important. I believe we are going to carry the day by God’s grace.”

The winner over the two legs will qualify for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted by Morocco later this year.

Opinion

Nigeria's impressive record in women's youth football makes the Flamingos favourites, but Busari's cautious approach is sensible. Final qualifying rounds are rarely straightforward, and underestimating opponents can quickly become costly. If the Flamingos maintain the attacking efficiency and defensive discipline they displayed against Guinea, they should be well-positioned to secure another World Cup appearance. However, building a comfortable advantage in the first leg could prove decisive before the away trip to Lomé.
