Ancelotti Reveals Neymar’s Role for Brazil at the World Cup

Ancelotti Reveals Neymar’s Role for Brazil at the World Cup

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has outlined how he intends to use Neymar at the World Cup, insisting the veteran star will operate in central attacking positions rather than on the wing.

The Italian tactician made the revelation after Brazil's emphatic 6-2 victory over Panama in an international friendly at the weekend.

Neymar was absent from the encounter as he continues his recovery from injury, while attackers Raphinha and Vinícius Júnior featured prominently in Brazil's attack.

Despite concerns over Neymar's fitness, Ancelotti made it clear that the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star remains a key part of his plans for the tournament.

"Neymar has to play in the position he's meant to play. That is in the centre of the field; he can't play on the wing."

The Brazilian coach went on to explain that Neymar's role will be focused on creating and influencing play in central areas.

"He won't play as a winger; he will play in the centre of the field, as a forward or attacking midfielder, in one of those positions.

"That's the position Vinicius and Raphinha played today."

A New Role for Brazil's No. 10

As Neymar enters the latter stages of his career, Ancelotti's comments suggest a tactical shift designed to maximize the player's creativity while reducing the physical demands associated with playing out wide.

Traditionally known for his dribbling and explosive runs from the flanks, Neymar has increasingly evolved into a playmaker capable of dictating attacks from central areas.

With younger and faster wingers available, Brazil appear ready to build their attack around Neymar's vision, experience, and technical quality rather than relying on him to beat defenders repeatedly on the touchline.

Opinion: Ancelotti's Plan Could Extend Neymar's World Cup Impact

Ancelotti's decision makes tactical sense and could be crucial to Brazil's hopes of winning a sixth World Cup title.

At 34, Neymar remains one of the most gifted footballers of his generation, but expecting him to cover large distances on the wing after multiple injury setbacks may not be the most effective use of his abilities. Playing centrally allows him to conserve energy, influence the game more frequently, and create opportunities for teammates.

The approach has worked for many elite players as they progressed through their careers. Rather than relying solely on pace, experienced stars often transition into more creative and intelligent roles where their footballing IQ becomes their greatest weapon.

The biggest concern remains fitness. Neymar's quality is beyond question, but his ability to stay healthy throughout the tournament will likely determine how much impact he can have.

If he returns fully fit, a partnership involving Neymar in a central role alongside dynamic attackers such as Vinicius and Raphinha could provide Brazil with one of the most dangerous attacking units at the World Cup.

For Ancelotti, the challenge is finding the perfect balance between protecting his star player and unlocking his genius. Judging by his latest comments, he already has a clear plan in mind.
