Van der Vaart Questions England’s World Cup Selections, Labels Eze and Madueke ‘Overrated’
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has sparked debate ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after criticizing England manager Thomas Tuchel’s decision to include Arsenal duo Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke in his squad.
The Dutch football icon believes both players have been overrated following their performances during the 2025/26 season and suggested that England may have overlooked more deserving options.
Eze and Madueke were both selected in Tuchel’s squad for the tournament despite not always being guaranteed starters for Arsenal throughout the campaign. While the pair contributed to the Gunners’ Premier League title triumph, injuries and squad rotation often influenced their involvement.
Speaking to Aceodds.com, Van der Vaart questioned whether their performances warranted inclusion in England’s final squad.
"As I observe the squad, I find Eze and Madueke to be overrated. Madueke is not actively playing for Arsenal, and Eze only features occasionally. I believe they are somewhat overrated," he said.
The former Dutch international acknowledged Madueke’s talent but insisted that neither player had enjoyed an outstanding season.
"I acknowledge that Madueke is a talented player; I am familiar with him from his time at PSV. However, this season has not been favorable for them, but due to Arsenal’s overall strong performance, they managed to contribute in some capacity."
Despite Van der Vaart’s criticism, the statistics tell a more balanced story.
Eze featured prominently for Arsenal, starting 36 of his 52 appearances in all competitions while contributing 10 goals and six assists. Madueke, meanwhile, registered eight goals and four assists in 43 appearances, starting 27 matches.
The former Tottenham star also expressed surprise at the omission of Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer, whom many expected to be included in England’s World Cup plans.
"Cole Palmer is an exceptional player, and even in the Netherlands, we frequently discuss his potential."
"He consistently makes a significant impact for Chelsea, and when reviewing the squad, one wonders: Why is he absent? To me, this decision is simply incomprehensible. I find it quite strange."
Palmer enjoyed another productive campaign for Chelsea, recording 11 goals and three assists in 34 appearances. The attacking midfielder has also impressed whenever given opportunities with the national team, contributing two goals and one assist in 14 appearances for England.
Are Eze and Madueke Really Overrated?
Van der Vaart's comments are likely to divide opinion among football fans.
On one hand, England possesses one of the deepest talent pools in world football, meaning any squad selection will inevitably leave some high-quality players disappointed. Palmer's omission, in particular, is certain to generate debate given his influence for Chelsea over the past two seasons.
On the other hand, labeling Eze and Madueke as "overrated" may be harsh considering their contributions to a title-winning Arsenal side. Winning the Premier League requires squad depth, consistency, and quality throughout the season, and both players played meaningful roles in that achievement.
International tournaments are also about tactical balance, versatility, and squad chemistry—not simply selecting players based on statistics alone. Tuchel may see qualities in Eze and Madueke that fit his overall game plan for the World Cup.
Ultimately, the success or failure of England's selections will be judged by performances on the pitch. If Eze and Madueke deliver when given opportunities, Van der Vaart's criticism could quickly be forgotten. However, if England struggle and Palmer shines from the sidelines, questions about Tuchel's decisions will only grow louder.
For now, the debate adds another intriguing storyline as England prepare for their quest to win a first World Cup since 1966.
