Eric Chelle Reveals Two Matches That Cost Super Eagles 2026 World Cup Qualification
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has identified the two crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures he believes played a major role in Nigeria’s failure to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking during an interview with Riadh Belaïche, Chelle pointed to Nigeria’s home draw against Zimbabwe and the away draw against South Africa as key moments where the team lost valuable points.
The Super Eagles were unable to turn those opportunities into victories, and the dropped points eventually affected their qualification campaign. Nigeria later missed out after losing the African play-off final to DR Congo, meaning the country will miss a second consecutive World Cup tournament.
“It’s true that in some matches, like against Zimbabwe, we drew at home while the match was in our hands. In the end, these two dropped points hurt us a lot. We also drew in South Africa,” Chelle said.
Nigeria’s qualification failure has continued to generate debate among fans, with many questioning missed opportunities throughout the campaign.
Opinion: Chelle’s comments highlight a painful reality in football — qualification campaigns are often decided by small moments. For a team with Nigeria’s talent pool, dropping points against direct qualification rivals can prove costly. The focus now should be on rebuilding consistency, improving decision-making in key matches and ensuring the Super Eagles do not repeat the same mistakes in future qualifiers.
