Japan, South Africa Crash Out of 2026 World Cup as Brazil Continue Knockout Push

Japan, South Africa Crash Out of 2026 World Cup as Brazil Continue Knockout Push

Japan and South Africa have become the first teams eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 stage after suffering defeats in their knockout matches.

Japan’s impressive World Cup journey came to an end on Monday after they lost 2-1 to five-time champions Brazil. The Asian side fought bravely but could not overcome Brazil’s quality, with goals from Casemiro and Gabriel Martinelli securing victory for the South Americans.

Japan managed to respond through Kaishu Sano, giving their supporters hope of a comeback, but Brazil held firm to book their place in the next round.

For Japan, the exit marks a disappointing end to a campaign where they showed determination and tactical discipline against some of the world’s strongest teams. Their performance, however, confirmed that Asian football continues to close the gap on the global stage.

South Africa’s elimination came earlier after they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Canada. The Bafana Bafana were unable to find an equaliser after Stephen Eustaquio scored late in stoppage time to send Canada through.

The result ended South Africa’s dream of progressing further in the tournament despite their spirited display.

While both teams are out, their campaigns have provided different lessons. Japan proved they can compete with elite nations, while South Africa showed resilience but were ultimately punished by a lack of cutting edge in a crucial knockout fixture.

As the World Cup knockout stage continues, attention now turns to the remaining Round of 32 battles, where more football giants and underdogs will fight to keep their title dreams alive.
