Frank Leboeuf Snubs Messi, Backs Mbappe and Kane in Golden Boot Race

Frank Leboeuf Snubs Messi, Backs Mbappe and Kane in Golden Boot Race

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has named France forward Kylian Mbappe and England captain Harry Kane as the leading contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot, leaving out current top scorer Lionel Messi from his prediction.

Messi has been one of the standout performers at the tournament, leading the scoring charts with six goals as Argentina continue their push for a second consecutive World Cup title.

Despite the Argentine superstar’s impressive form, Leboeuf believes the expanded World Cup format could change the dynamics of the Golden Boot race, with more teams involved creating opportunities for attackers to score more goals.

Speaking to BOYLE Sports, the former France international argued that Mbappe and Kane remain the strongest candidates if their countries advance deep into the competition.

“The increased number of teams changes things. I don’t want to be overly harsh on nations like Curacao, Haiti, or Cape Verde, but the Golden Boot could easily be decided by someone scoring six or seven goals against those teams,” Leboeuf said.

“For the Golden Boot, the favourites have to be Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe. If England and France both go deep in the tournament, I think it will be a contest between the two of them.”

Leboeuf’s prediction has sparked debate among football fans, especially considering Messi’s current scoring form and his ability to deliver on the biggest stage. However, with Mbappe’s pace and Kane’s finishing ability, the race for the tournament’s top scorer could still go down to the final rounds.

The Golden Boot battle is shaping up to be another fascinating storyline in a World Cup filled with individual records and unforgettable performances.
