Mbappe Edges Messi in FIFA World Cup Golden Boot Race Ahead of Semi-Finals

Mbappe Edges Messi in FIFA World Cup Golden Boot Race Ahead of Semi-Finals

FIFA has confirmed that France captain Kylian Mbappe currently leads Argentina's Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Both superstars have scored eight goals heading into the semi-finals, but Mbappe holds the advantage due to his greater number of assists.

According to FIFA, the French forward has registered three assists during the tournament, while Messi has provided one. Under the competition's official regulations, assists serve as the first tiebreaker when players finish level on goals.

In a statement released on Sunday, FIFA explained the ranking criteria:

"If two or more players score the same number of goals, the number of assists (as determined by the members of the FIFA Technical Study Group) shall be decisive.

"If two or more players are still equal after taking into account the number of assists, the total minutes played in the tournament will be taken into account, with the player playing fewer minutes ranked first."

Norway striker Erling Haaland, whose side has already been eliminated, remains in contention with seven goals.

England teammates Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane are also among the leading scorers, having each recorded six goals and one assist, though they will likely need outstanding performances in the remaining matches to challenge for the award.

With only the semi-finals and final left to play, the battle between Mbappe and Messi promises to be one of the defining individual storylines of the tournament.

Opinion:

The Golden Boot race perfectly reflects the quality both Mbappe and Messi have brought to the World Cup. While goals remain the headline statistic, FIFA's tiebreaker system rewards players who also create chances for teammates, making Mbappe's current lead well deserved. However, with at least one more match remaining for both stars, the contest is still far from over and could be decided by a single decisive moment in the tournament's closing stages.
