Haaland Accepts Responsibility After Norway’s World Cup Exit, Promises Stronger Comeback
Norway striker Erling Haaland has pledged to work even harder after his country's 2026 FIFA World Cup journey ended with a quarter-final defeat to England.
The Scandinavian side crashed out of the tournament on Saturday after Jude Bellingham scored twice to inspire the Three Lions to victory, while Haaland was unable to add to his impressive goal tally.
Speaking after the match, the Manchester City forward apologised to Norwegian supporters and admitted the team fell short of expectations.
"I want to thank every Norwegian fan who supported us throughout the tournament. We know we let you down tonight, and that is very painful," Haaland said.
The 25-year-old, who finished the tournament with seven goals, insisted the disappointment would serve as motivation for the future.
"Today we leave with disappointment, but I will keep working hard, continue to improve myself, and do everything I can to help Norway achieve better results.
"That is both my responsibility and one I am willing to take on."
Despite the painful exit, Haaland enjoyed another prolific World Cup campaign and remained among the tournament's leading scorers before Norway's elimination.
The striker is now expected to shift his focus to club football before returning to international duty as Norway begin preparations for future major competitions.
Opinion:
Haaland's response after the defeat demonstrates leadership and accountability rather than making excuses. Although Norway's World Cup dream ended earlier than they had hoped, reaching the quarter-finals was a significant achievement for a nation that has struggled to qualify for major tournaments in recent decades. With Haaland still in his prime and a talented generation developing around him, Norway have every reason to believe their best days on the international stage are still ahead.
