Yvonne Jegede Criticizes Government Over Insecurity, Says Nigerians Feel Abandoned

Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has strongly criticized the Nigerian government over the worsening security situation in the country, accusing leaders of failing to demonstrate sufficient concern for the safety and welfare of citizens.

In a post shared on her Instagram page, the actress directed her remarks at President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, expressing frustration over the growing sense of insecurity and fear among Nigerians.

According to Jegede, the problem extends beyond the occurrence of crime itself. She argued that many citizens have lost confidence in the system because they believe help may not come when they are in danger.

“The Nigerian government lacks a sense of humanity,” she wrote.

“Nigerians are not doormats, nor are they people you just prey on. Crimes happen everywhere in the world; the fact that Nigerians know that no one will ever come looking for them is the issue.”

The actress further noted that the recent wave of violence and insecurity has affected people across ethnic, religious, and social divides, stressing that the crisis should be viewed as a national concern rather than a sectional issue.

Her comments come amid growing public concern over kidnappings, killings, and attacks in different parts of the country, prompting several public figures to call for stronger government action.

In recent weeks, a number of entertainers and actors have publicly voiced their concerns. Actress Yvonne Jegede previously reacted to the killing of a teacher in Oyo State, questioning why more Nigerians were not speaking out about the tragedy.

Other celebrities, including Funke Akindele, Lateef Adedimeji, Kunle Remi, Ruth Kadiri, Adeniyi Johnson, Hilda Dokubo, and Lala Akindoju, have also expressed concern over insecurity and urged authorities to take decisive measures to protect lives and property.

Many of them have highlighted the emotional toll that recurring reports of abductions and violence are having on ordinary Nigerians, particularly families who fear for the safety of their loved ones.

Opinion: Public Frustration Reflects a Deeper National Concern

Yvonne Jegede's comments are unlikely to be viewed merely as a celebrity opinion. Rather, they echo concerns that many Nigerians have openly expressed in recent years regarding security and public safety.

One of the most troubling aspects of insecurity is not only the crimes themselves but the feeling of helplessness they can create. When citizens begin to believe that they are largely on their own in moments of danger, trust in institutions can be severely weakened.

It is also notable that many of the voices speaking out come from different backgrounds, regions, and professions. Their concerns suggest that insecurity is increasingly being viewed as a national challenge that affects everyone regardless of ethnicity, religion, or social status.

At the same time, public criticism places additional pressure on leaders to communicate clearly about ongoing efforts to address security threats and reassure citizens that their safety remains a priority.

While social media statements alone cannot solve complex security problems, they often serve as a reflection of public sentiment. The growing number of prominent Nigerians speaking out indicates that frustration is no longer confined to isolated communities but has become part of a broader national conversation.

Ultimately, what many citizens appear to be demanding is simple: greater security, stronger protection of lives and property, and renewed confidence that every Nigerian matters regardless of where they live or who they are.
