“Acting Was an Accident” – Nkem Owoh Opens Up on How Fame Changed His Life
Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, has revealed that his successful acting career was never part of his original plan, describing his journey into acting as an unexpected twist of fate.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Selah Meditate podcast, the celebrated comic actor disclosed that he initially worked behind the scenes as a scriptwriter and had no intention of becoming a performer.
According to Owoh, it was colleagues who repeatedly encouraged him to step in front of the camera after noticing his natural ability to make people laugh.
"My coming in front of the camera was an accident. I was a scriptwriter behind the scenes and people started telling me to start performing in front of the camera," he said.
The actor recalled how the former Anambra Television (ATV) gave him a seven-minute stand-up comedy segment in the 1980s after recognizing his comic talent.
"They told me to come in front of the camera because I was making people laugh behind the camera. With much pressure, I came in front of the camera. And I saw that what I was doing people were buying, so that was how my acting career began."
What started as a reluctant move soon blossomed into one of the most remarkable careers in Nollywood history. Over the years, Nkem Owoh became a household name, earning admiration across Africa for his unique humour, memorable characters, and timeless performances.
However, the veteran actor noted that fame comes with sacrifices that many people often overlook.
Reflecting on the downside of celebrity life, he admitted that public recognition has significantly reduced his freedom.
"Fame took away my freedom. A lot of people want to be celebrities; they only know the benefits but not the downsides. When you become famous, you can't do a lot of the things you were doing freely before. You become restricted in a lot of ways," he explained.
