Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has tipped Spain to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing confidence that his homeland has what it takes to overcome France and go all the way to lifting the trophy.
Speaking ahead of Spain's blockbuster semi-final clash with France, the former Real Madrid and Spain midfielder said the current squad reminds him of the team that won the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.
Spain, the reigning European champions, have impressed throughout the tournament, recording convincing victories over Austria in the Round of 32 before eliminating rivals Portugal in the Round of 16. They booked their place in the semi-finals thanks to Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino's dramatic late winner against Belgium.
However, Luis de la Fuente's side faces its toughest challenge yet against a France team that has won all six of its matches, scoring 16 goals while conceding only twice.
Despite France's formidable form, Alonso remains optimistic about Spain's chances.
"Watching all the Spain matches evokes many memories from the World Cup we won. It is due to the team, the energy they exude, and their control over the games," Alonso told Chelsea's official website.
"We certainly have many reasons to be optimistic. Regardless of the outcome against France, it promises to be a fantastic match to witness, and I am genuinely looking forward to it."
"They possess a great team, and I can definitely see them winning this World Cup."
Alonso also has a personal interest in the latter stages of the tournament, with several of his Chelsea players—including England defender Reece James and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández—still competing for football's biggest prize.
Opinion:
Xabi Alonso's confidence in Spain is understandable given the team's composure, tactical discipline, and impressive run to the semi-finals. However, France have been arguably the most complete side in the tournament, combining defensive solidity with attacking firepower. If Spain are to reach the final, they will need to produce their best performance yet. Regardless of the outcome, the clash promises to be a fitting contest between two of the world's elite football nations and could easily be remembered as the tournament's standout match.
