Messi Predicts Tight World Cup Final Against Spain

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has described Spain as a "tremendous team" and expects a fiercely contested battle when the two football powerhouses meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.

The defending champions secured their place in the showpiece after overcoming England in the semi-finals, with Messi once again playing a decisive role in Argentina's victory.

Now, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is preparing for a blockbuster clash against the reigning European champions, a team he believes possesses one of the strongest football identities in the world.

Speaking after Argentina's semi-final triumph, Messi praised Spain's quality and the philosophy that has defined their success for years.

"They are a tremendous team, with outstanding players. They play excellent football," Messi said.

The Inter Miami star also admitted that his long association with Spanish football gives him a deep appreciation of their style, having spent most of his legendary club career at Barcelona.

"I know the Spanish side well, and they have a style of play they have developed over many years."

Messi noted that several members of Spain's squad currently represent Barcelona, a club he still follows closely despite leaving in 2021.

"Several of the squad play for Barca, a club that means a great deal to me and that I still keep up with."

Looking ahead to Sunday's final, the Argentine captain predicted an evenly balanced contest between two of the world's best teams.

"It will be a special World Cup final, and obviously, I expect it to be very closely matched."

The final will pit the defending world champions against the reigning European champions in what promises to be one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.

Opinion

Messi's assessment of Spain is both respectful and realistic. Spain have arguably been the most complete team at the tournament, combining defensive discipline with fluid attacking football. Argentina, meanwhile, possess the experience, resilience and match-winners capable of thriving on the biggest stage. Rather than overwhelming favourites, this final feels like a genuine 50-50 contest. If both teams perform at their peak, football fans could be treated to a World Cup classic worthy of the occasion.
