Nwabali Took Football Break to Protect His Mental Health After Family Tragedies – Agent
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali temporarily stepped away from football earlier this year to cope with overwhelming personal grief and safeguard his mental health, according to comments from his agent reported by ESPN.
Nwabali ended his contract with South African Premiership side Chippa United in February before returning to the club five months later, bringing months of speculation over his future to an end.
His agent, Mohammed Lawal, has now revealed that the decision was driven by the emotional toll of devastating family losses rather than football-related issues.
According to Lawal, the 29-year-old endured an incredibly difficult period, losing his grandmother and both parents within the space of just 18 months.
"After losing his parents, he became responsible for everything. There was a lot he needed to take care of," Lawal said.
Lawal explained that although Nwabali remained committed to his profession, the emotional burden had begun to affect both his wellbeing and his performances.
"As a professional, he knew he had to keep playing, but it was affecting him and if he continued, he was going to destroy himself because when you're not in the right mental state, it shows."
He added that some of the goalkeeper's behaviour during Super Eagles matches may have been misunderstood by supporters.
"You could see it during some of his games for the national team. People probably thought he was fighting with his teammates."
Nwabali's return to Chippa United now marks a fresh chapter as he looks to rebuild both mentally and professionally after one of the most challenging periods of his life.
Opinion
Stanley Nwabali's story is a powerful reminder that footballers are human beings before they are athletes. The pressure to perform at the highest level often masks the personal battles players face away from the spotlight. Choosing to step back and prioritise mental health should be viewed as a sign of strength, not weakness. With the support of his club, family and fans, Nwabali now has an opportunity to rediscover his best form while showing that seeking time to heal is sometimes the bravest decision an athlete can make.
