Argentina Challenge FIFA Over Spain’s ‘Unfair Advantage’ Ahead of World Cup Final
Argentina have reportedly lodged a complaint with FIFA over what they believe is an unfair scheduling advantage enjoyed by Spain ahead of Sunday's 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni voiced his frustration during his pre-match press conference, arguing that the reigning champions have been placed at a disadvantage compared to their opponents.
Spain booked their place in the final on Tuesday with a comfortable 2-0 victory over France, giving them an extra day to recover before the title decider. Argentina, meanwhile, had to wait until Wednesday night to secure a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over England, leaving them with less recovery time.
Scaloni also criticized FIFA's scheduling of Argentina's training session after the team arrived in New York.
“We are currently resting as we arrived last night around 11:00.
“Today, we were compelled to train at a time that was not ideal for us.
“However, due to the press conference and other commitments, we had to conduct a brief and unusual training session, which did not allow us to practice effectively.”
The Argentina coach revealed that some members of his squad are still not at full fitness as preparations continue for the final.
“Our focus is on recovery, and we will assess how the players are feeling, as some are not at full fitness.
“We will evaluate their condition. We approach the game with a focus on ourselves, while also being aware of the strengths of our opponent.”
Despite his concerns, Scaloni praised Argentina's supporters, saying the unwavering backing they have received throughout the tournament has inspired the team as they chase a second consecutive World Cup title.
The highly anticipated final will see defending champions Argentina face European champions Spain in a clash between two of the tournament's standout teams.
Opinion
Scheduling in major tournaments has long been a source of debate, particularly in the latter stages where recovery time can have a significant impact on player fitness and performance. While Spain's additional day of rest could offer a slight physical advantage, such differences are often unavoidable given tournament logistics.
Ultimately, both teams have earned their place in the final through outstanding performances. If Argentina overcome Spain despite the perceived disadvantage, it will only strengthen the significance of their achievement. Conversely, Spain will know that any victory is likely to be scrutinised through the lens of the scheduling controversy, making Sunday's showdown even more compelling.
