Messi Not Football’s Greatest Player, Says Rwanda Coach Stephen Constantine
Rwanda head coach Stephen Constantine has stirred debate ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final by insisting that Argentina captain Lionel Messi is not the greatest footballer of all time.
Despite acknowledging Messi's extraordinary ability on the ball, Constantine argued that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner contributes less defensively, forcing his teammates to compensate when Argentina are out of possession.
Speaking ahead of Sunday's World Cup final against Spain, Constantine praised Argentina's tactical discipline in covering for their captain.
“When he has the ball, he’s almost unstoppable. But without it, you’re effectively playing with 10 men because the others have to cover his work.
“Argentina do that brilliantly. So, yeah, no, no, for me, he’s not the best. He’s one of the best, but he’s not. I wouldn’t say he is the best.”
Messi has enjoyed another outstanding World Cup campaign, scoring eight goals and providing four assists to guide the defending champions back to the final.
The 39-year-old has played a decisive role throughout the tournament, inspiring Argentina to dramatic comeback victories and keeping alive their hopes of retaining the trophy they won in Qatar four years ago.
His performances have also strengthened his case for a record-extending ninth Ballon d'Or, with many considering him one of the favourites for the prestigious award.
