Pete Edochie Named Awolowo, And Nigeria Heard Something Else

Pete Edochie Named Awolowo, And Nigeria Heard Something Else

Entertainment

Pete Edochie was asked to name his favourite Nigerian politician of all time. He said Chief Obafemi Awolowo, former Premier of the defunct Western Region, and added that he regretted Awolowo never became president.

He was speaking on the interview series Curiosity Made Me Ask, hosted by the content creator BaeU. By Sunday it had been picked up by twenty-seven outlets.

The reason given

Edochie's stated grounds were developmental. He credited Awolowo with pioneering initiatives that included the first television station in Africa, which the Western Region launched in 1959, three years before the federal service existed. Free primary education in the West is the other achievement usually attached to that record.

The detail that carries the argument. Awolowo built a broadcaster, a university and a free schooling system at regional level, which is the point admirers keep making: he did it without ever holding the office everyone remembers him for losing.

Why this is not really an entertainment story

Because of who said it. Edochie is Igbo, is one of the most recognised faces in Nollywood, and named a Yoruba politician whose relationship with the East during and after the civil war remains one of the most contested subjects in Nigerian public life.

In a country where public figures are expected to admire along ethnic lines, declining to do that is itself the statement.

That is why it travelled. Very little about the answer is about Awolowo. Most of the reaction is about whether an Igbo elder statesman of the screen is allowed to say it, and what it implies that he did.

The 2027 shadow

The remark lands in a campaign season in which every alignment is being read for a signal. Edochie has not endorsed anybody living. He named a man who died in 1987.

It says something about the current mood that this was still treated as news by twenty-seven newsrooms in a single weekend.
