Ruth Kadiri Had To Record A Video To Prove She Is Alive

Ruth Kadiri has posted a video telling Nigerians she is alive. Reports had circulated over the weekend claiming the actress and filmmaker had died. Her words were plain enough: she is alive, she did not have an accident, and she is safe.

She also called for something to be done about how quickly this kind of thing spreads.

Why celebrity death rumours keep happening here

Because they pay. A false death post about a well-known Nigerian generates enormous engagement in the first two hours, before anybody has checked. Engagement is the product being sold, whether the account is monetised directly or is building a following to sell later.

The cost falls entirely on the subject and their family. There is currently no practical penalty for the poster, and the correction always reaches a fraction of the people who saw the original.

The rumour travels as news. The denial travels as a celebrity post. Those are not the same distance.

This weekend made the pattern unusually visible

Kadiri was denying a false death report at almost exactly the same time Nigerian media was reporting the confirmed death of the actress Nimmy Ferrari, and the confirmed death of the businessman Igho Ubiribo in Bangkok.

The practical damage. When real deaths and invented ones occupy the same feed on the same weekend, audiences stop being able to tell them apart. Families of the actually bereaved then spend their first day fielding calls asking whether it is true.

What would actually reduce it

Very little that any individual can do. The realistic levers are platform-side: down ranking accounts with a history of fabricated death claims, and treating a death report from an unverified source as a category requiring confirmation, the way health and election claims already are.

Nigerian entertainment media could also stop aggregating these posts before checking, which is the step that turns a rumour into something that looks like reporting. Kadiri is alive and well, and had to spend part of her weekend proving it.
