The Inquest Into Igho Ubiribo's Death Has Reported

Entertainment

Igho Ubiribo, the British-Nigerian businessman and influencer known as Tiny, died after a cosmetic procedure in Thailand. He was 43. The inquest has now reported, and the finding is unusually direct: a pulmonary embolism caused by the procedure itself.

He was a childhood friend of Davido, who attended the funeral and gave a tribute.

What the pathologist found

According to evidence given at the inquest, 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine were injected at a clinic in Thailand. A post-mortem examination carried out in the United Kingdom identified material consistent with hyaluronic acid filler in his lungs. The pathologist, John du Parcq, concluded that the procedure caused the fatal blockage.

Inquest findingPulmonary embolism caused by the cosmetic procedure

As reported from the inquest proceedings.

The medical point, stated plainly

Hyaluronic acid filler is not inherently lethal. It is used in enormous volumes in clinics worldwide. The danger is specific and known: if filler enters a blood vessel, it can travel. When it reaches the lungs it can block the pulmonary arteries, which is what an embolism is.

Why volume matters. Forty millilitres is a very large single injection by the standards of aesthetic practice. The larger the volume delivered in one session, the higher the pressure required and the greater the chance of intravascular placement.
The risk in this category of procedure is not the substance. It is where the needle ends up, and how much is pushed through it at once.

Why this story is being read in Nigeria

Partly the Davido connection, which is why it has run in entertainment sections rather than health ones. But there is a second reason, and it is more useful.

Cosmetic medical tourism out of Nigeria and the Nigerian diaspora has grown quickly, with Turkey and Thailand as the main destinations, and it is sold almost entirely through social media. The marketing emphasises price and recovery time. It does not generally mention embolism, and there is no straightforward way for a customer to check a foreign clinic's licensing, its complication rate, or whether the person holding the needle is a doctor.

What a person can actually check

  • Who is performing the procedure, by name and qualification, before travelling.
  • Whether the clinic can manage an emergency on site, or has to call an ambulance.
  • What volume is being injected in one session, and whether it can be staged.
  • Whether there is insurance that covers a complication abroad.

He was reportedly buried in a gold coffin valued at over $600,000. That figure has carried most of the coverage. The forty millilitres is the part worth remembering.
