Peter Obi Is Telling Voters To Stay Until The Result Is Announced
Abuja · Monday 7 September 2026
Peter Obi has urged INEC to ensure a free, fair and credible 2027 election. He has also told Nigerians to defend their votes until the final results are announced. The two statements are doing different jobs.
The first is a request to an institution. The second is a set of instructions to several million people.
Why "until the final result" is the operative phrase
Nigerian elections have historically been altered less at the ballot box than between the polling unit and the collation centre. A result sheet is completed at the unit in front of party agents and voters. It then travels, gets aggregated at ward level, then local government, then state.
Each of those transfers is a point at which a number can change. Voters who go home after casting a ballot have participated in the part of the process that is hardest to corrupt and absented themselves from the part that is easiest.
| Stage | Who is watching |
|---|---|
| Voting and counting at the unit | Voters, agents, observers, phones |
| Ward collation | Agents, sometimes observers |
| Local government collation | Agents |
| State collation | Agents and cameras, occasionally |
Scrutiny thins at every step away from the polling unit.
The risk in the instruction
Telling people to stay and defend a result is also how confrontations start. The line between lawful observation and a crowd refusing to disperse at a collation centre is thin, and it is not the candidate who is standing there at two in the morning.
Every Nigerian election produces both civic vigilance and violence at collation centres, and the same instruction produces both.
The version that works
Photograph the result sheet at your own polling unit. Stay for the announcement of that unit's figures. Leave. The document is the defence, and a photograph of it travels further and more safely than a person does.
Obi is right that the count matters more than the vote. The safest way to act on that is with a camera rather than a crowd.
