Aisha Yesufu Says They Will Not Leave The Votes To INEC

Geo-Political News

Aisha Yesufu has said Peter Obi's supporters will not leave his votes to INEC, and will deploy representatives to polling units to monitor the movement of materials and results from the units through collation centres to Abuja.

This is not a threat, it is the rulebook

Party agents at polling units are provided for in Nigerian electoral law. They are entitled to observe the count, to be given a copy of the result sheet, and to sign or refuse to sign it. What Yesufu is describing is the system working as designed.

Why the result sheet matters most. The signed unit-level result is the primary document. Every dispute that has ever succeeded in a Nigerian court has been won with copies of those sheets, not with rhetoric about the process.

The scale of what she is proposing

RequirementThe hard part
An agent at every polling unitThere are over a hundred and seventy thousand
Each one trainedKnowing what to check, and what to refuse to sign
Each one paid or fedA full day, often far from home
Results collected centrallyThe part that usually collapses

Coverage is the whole game, and coverage is expensive.

This is the specific thing that separates a party with structure from a party with enthusiasm. The APC and PDP have spent decades building ward-level machinery precisely because of this. A newer platform has to buy or build it inside eighteen months.

Nigerian elections are won by whoever has a literate, paid, unafraid person standing in the most polling units at the moment of the count.

The risk in the framing

"We will not leave it to INEC" is accurate as a description of agent deployment and corrosive as a slogan, because it tells supporters in advance that the official result should not be believed. If the count is then close, that expectation is already set.

How to do it responsibly

Collect the sheets, publish the aggregate, and take any discrepancy to the tribunal with the documents attached. That is a parallel record used as evidence. Announcing a rival result from it, before any adjudication, is the version that has caused Nigeria serious trouble before.

Yesufu is right that the paperwork is where 2027 will be decided. What her side does with the paperwork afterwards is the part still to be determined.
