INEC has fixed 19 September for legislative by-elections across four states. The poll is eight days away.
Why a by-election is worth more attention than its stakes
Because it is a live test of the machinery on a small enough scale to observe properly. Everything that will be argued about in February 2027 happens here first, with a fraction of the attention and none of the national pressure.

The context it sits in
INEC is simultaneously planning IDP voting centres in nine Plateau local governments, has published the penalties for campaign intimidation, and has just been ordered by a court to upload a party's logo. The commission's competence is the live question of this political season, and by-elections are where it is answered in public.
Nobody litigates a by-election for four years. That is exactly why it is the honest test.
What low turnout will mean, and will not
By-election turnout in Nigeria is usually very low, and it will be reported as apathy. Some of it is. Some of it is people who cannot afford to lose a day's trading for a seat that changes nothing, which is a rational calculation rather than indifference.
The useful measure is not how many voted. It is whether the people who turned up were able to.
The follow-up worth making
A published post-election report from INEC on the four states, naming what failed. The commission has the data. Whether it publishes an honest account of a low-stakes poll is a fair predictor of what it will publish about a high-stakes one.
