INEC plans to establish voting centres for internally displaced persons in nine local government areas of Plateau State ahead of the 2027 elections.
No candidate said anything quotable, so it will not travel far. It is one of the more consequential things the commission has announced this month.
The problem it addresses
A Nigerian is registered to vote at a specific polling unit. Someone displaced by violence is, by definition, no longer near it. Without a special arrangement, displacement removes the vote as effectively as any form of suppression, and it does so quietly, because nobody is turned away at a polling station.

Each row has failed somewhere in a previous Nigerian election.
The constituency question is the hard one
A presidential vote is straightforward, because the constituency is the country. A governorship, senatorial or house vote is not: the ballot has to be the one for the voter's home area, not the area they have fled to. That means a camp centre may need to run several different ballots at once, and getting it wrong disenfranchises people while appearing to have served them.
The announcement is the easy half. The register is the half that decides whether anybody actually votes.
Why announcing it now is the right call
Because there is time to test it. An arrangement designed in September 2026 can be rehearsed at a by-election and corrected. One designed in January 2027 cannot.
The measurable follow-up is whether INEC publishes the number of displaced voters it expects to serve in each of the nine areas. That figure would let anyone check afterwards whether the centres were adequate, and its absence would make the scheme unauditable by design.
