Troost-Ekong: Super Eagles Ready to Fight for 2026 World Cup Ticket in CAF Play-Offs
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed confidence that Nigeria will give their all in the upcoming CAF Play-Off Tournament for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The mini-tournament, which will determine Africa’s final representatives at the World Cup, is scheduled to take place in Morocco from November 13 to 16, 2025.
Nigeria sealed their place in the playoffs after a resounding 4–0 victory over Benin Republic on Tuesday night in Uyo, with Victor Osimhen’s hat-trick inspiring a dominant performance that reignited hopes of reaching the mundial.
Speaking to thenff.com, Troost-Ekong said the players are grateful for another shot at qualification despite missing the automatic ticket.
“We are quite happy to have that opportunity. It’s a long route but it’s a route after all. We would have loved to get the automatic ticket, but it didn’t happen and we take what we have,” he said.
“For us, we will remain strong and tough and ready to confront every challenge on our way as we search for the ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”
The Super Eagles will face Gabon in the semi-final of the playoffs as they look to take a crucial step closer to qualification.
💬 Opinion: Nigeria’s Second Chance — A Test of Grit and Redemption
The road to the 2026 World Cup hasn’t been smooth for the Super Eagles, but this playoff opportunity is more than just a lifeline — it’s a test of character, unity, and resilience.
Troost-Ekong’s statement reflects a sense of maturity and determination that fans have been yearning to see from the team. It’s easy to dwell on what went wrong during the qualifiers, but now the focus must shift to what can still be achieved.
Nigeria’s dominant win over Benin was a glimpse of what the team is truly capable of when motivation meets execution. However, as history has shown, talent alone doesn’t win crucial games — discipline, focus, and leadership do.
The playoffs in Morocco will demand nothing short of excellence. For Troost-Ekong and his men, this is a chance to rewrite the narrative — from disappointment to redemption. And if the team maintains the same hunger and unity displayed in Uyo, then Nigeria’s World Cup dream is far from over.
Because sometimes, the second chance is where true champions are made.
