Joe Aribo Yet to Earn Southampton Return as Will Still Opens Up on Selection Dilemma
Southampton manager Will Still has offered a candid explanation for Joe Aribo’s continued absence from his matchday squad, admitting that the Super Eagles midfielder — alongside winger Sam Edozie — is “not yet ready” to feature for the team.
Speaking ahead of Southampton’s Championship clash with Swansea City this weekend, Still explained that both players missed crucial pre-season preparations, making it difficult to integrate them into the squad without disrupting team chemistry.
“They’re still with us but they’ve missed a whole chunk of pre-season, and we have to be fair and honest with everyone,” Still said, according to the Daily Echo.
“Who are you taking out? Are you going to say to Leo [Scienza], Tom Fellows, Finn [Azaz] or Jay Robinson, you’re out because Sam Edozie’s back in? They’re just choices that we have to make. I’m just trying to stay as honest and as level as I can with everyone.”
Aribo, who was linked with a summer move away from St Mary’s, has remained on the sidelines this season despite being a key performer for the Saints last campaign. The 28-year-old’s creativity and versatility in midfield were instrumental in Southampton’s promotion push, but his current spell on the bench has raised questions about his future under Still’s management.
⚽ Opinion: A Case of Timing, Not Talent for Aribo
Joe Aribo’s situation is a classic example of how quickly football dynamics can shift. One moment you’re a core part of a club’s plans; the next, a missed pre-season and a few new signings can leave you playing catch-up.
Will Still’s comments don’t come across as dismissive — rather, they show the harsh reality of modern squad management. In a team gunning for Premier League promotion, every selection counts, and managers often stick with the players who’ve had the full rhythm of pre-season.
But make no mistake — Aribo’s quality is not in doubt. His composure on the ball, eye for a pass, and ability to break defensive lines are traits Southampton could sorely need as the season progresses. What he needs now is patience — and perhaps a chance to prove himself again in training or cup matches.
If he stays fit and focused, it’s only a matter of time before Joe Aribo reminds the Championship why he remains one of Nigeria’s most gifted midfielders.
After all, form is temporary — class is permanent. 💫
