Gambian Referee Ngum Fatou to Officiate Benin Republic vs Nigeria WAFCON Qualifier
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Gambian referee Ngum Fatou to take charge of the crucial 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifying match between Benin Republic and Nigeria, TalkTalk Nigeria reports.
The encounter, which marks the first leg of the second-round tie, is scheduled to take place on Thursday at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé, Togo, with kick-off set for 4 p.m. Nigerian time.
Fatou will be assisted by two Mauritanians — Mariem Chedad as assistant referee one and Hamedine Houleye as assistant referee two — while another Gambian, Isatou Touray, will serve as the fourth official.
In addition, Halimatou Hamidou from Niger Republic has been appointed match commissioner, and Martha Nyekanyeka of Malawi will act as the referee assessor.
💭 Opinion: A Positive Step for African Women in Officiating
Ngum Fatou’s appointment once again highlights CAF’s growing trust in women officials across the continent — a commendable move that continues to push the boundaries of inclusion in African football.
It’s refreshing to see female referees taking the center stage in such high-profile fixtures, especially involving teams like the Super Falcons of Nigeria — Africa’s most successful women’s football side.
For young girls watching across Africa, this isn’t just another match; it’s inspiration in motion. It’s proof that women are not only excelling on the pitch but also taking charge of the game itself.
As the Super Falcons look to begin their qualification journey on a strong note, all eyes will also be on Ngum Fatou and her team — not just for the decisions they make, but for what they represent: a new era where women in African football lead with authority, fairness, and pride.
