Alex Unusual Condemns Nnamdi Kanu’s Life Sentence, Describes Verdict as “Selective Justice”

Alex Unusual Condemns Nnamdi Kanu’s Life Sentence, Describes Verdict as “Selective Justice”

Media personality Alex Amuche Asogwa, popularly known as Alex Unusual, has openly criticised the life imprisonment sentence handed down to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu was convicted on seven terrorism-related charges and sentenced on Wednesday, November 20. The ruling has stirred fresh debates across the country, with Alex Unusual becoming one of the most prominent public figures to voice concern.

In an open letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Alex described the judgment as unfair and reflective of inconsistency in Nigeria’s judicial system. According to her, several individuals involved in acts of terrorism have, over the years, negotiated with the government and in some cases received pardons.

She further highlighted how public officials accused of draining national resources often walk free, reinforcing a perception that justice in Nigeria is unevenly distributed.

“Why is Nnamdi Kanu’s case — with all its complexity and historical weight — concluded with a life sentence?” she questioned.
Alex concluded her letter by saying the ruling “feels like selective justice from the judicial system.”

OPINION: The Backlash to Kanu’s Sentence Shows Nigeria’s Deepening Trust Crisis

Whether or not one agrees with Nnamdi Kanu’s ideology, one thing is clear: his sentencing has reopened old wounds and intensified conversations about fairness, governance, and trust in Nigeria.

Alex Unusual’s reaction reflects what many Nigerians silently feel — not necessarily support for Kanu, but frustration with a system that seems to operate with shifting rules. When terrorists negotiate peace deals, corrupt officials return stolen loot without jail time, and politically connected individuals escape scrutiny, the judiciary’s decisiveness in this one case becomes difficult for many to comprehend.

The heart of the outrage is not about excusing wrongdoing; it’s about consistency. Nigerians want a justice system that doesn’t change its tone depending on the personality involved. The contrasting treatment of offenders creates a dangerous impression: that justice is strongest against those without political leverage.

This moment presents a crucial opportunity for the government and judiciary to rebuild confidence. Transparency, consistent sentencing, and sincere accountability could turn a controversial ruling into a national turning point.

Until then, voices like Alex’s will continue to rise — not necessarily for Kanu, but for a Nigeria where the scales of justice do not tilt based on status, tribe, or political value.
