Sunderland Eye €10m Move for Lazio’s Dele-Bashiru Ahead of January Window
Sunderland are reportedly preparing a January swoop for Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, according to TalkTalk Nigeria.
The Nigeria international joined the Italian side last summer from Turkish Super Lig outfit Hatayspor and impressed in his debut campaign. Despite being relatively new to top-flight European football, Dele-Bashiru recorded five goals and three assists in 28 appearances — a return that quickly earned him respect among Lazio supporters.
However, the 22-year-old’s progress this season has been slowed by a hamstring injury, restricting him to just four appearances so far. With competition for midfield places growing, Lazio are believed to be open to selling — but only if a suitable offer arrives. Reports from Italy suggest the Serie A club value him around €10 million.
Sunderland, who continue to build a youthful and ambitious squad, are said to be leading the chase and could make their move when the transfer window opens in January.
A Smart Gamble or a Pricey Risk?
From a footballing standpoint, this potential transfer feels like one of those moves that could define a season. Dele-Bashiru brings energy, ball-carrying ability, creativity, and an eye for goal — qualities Sunderland have lacked consistently in midfield.
However, €10 million is not pocket change for a Championship club, especially for a player currently recovering from injury. It raises a fair question: are Sunderland investing in proven impact or betting on potential?
Still, modern football rewards courage. If Sunderland truly believe in Dele-Bashiru’s ceiling — and his numbers suggest they should — then this could be a signing that transforms their promotion push and gives fans a long-term midfield star to rally behind.
For now, it’s just interest. But interest often leads to negotiations… and negotiations sometimes lead to headlines.
January may be far more exciting than expected on Wearside.
