CAF Fines Egypt $5,000 Over Media Snub After Zimbabwe Win
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined Egypt $5,000 following the team’s failure to fulfill post-match media obligations after their Group game against Zimbabwe, TalkTalk Nigeria reports.
The Pharaohs secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory in what turned out to be an entertaining contest. However, the result was soon overshadowed by their decision to avoid the media after the final whistle.
Players and technical officials, led by head coach Hossam Hassan, reportedly bypassed the mixed zone, refusing to engage journalists as required by CAF regulations. According to the continental body, the action constituted a clear breach of media obligations.
CAF has also issued a warning, stating that Egypt could face stiffer sanctions should a similar incident occur in subsequent matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The seven-time African champions are scheduled to face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in their second group match on Friday.
Opinion: While Egypt’s focus on results and discipline on the pitch is understandable, media engagement remains a vital part of modern football. Fans across Africa rely on these moments to connect with players and understand the emotions behind the game. For a nation with Egypt’s rich football history and influence, setting a positive example off the pitch is just as important as winning matches. As the tournament progresses, the Pharaohs will be expected to match their on-field ambition with professionalism beyond the 90 minutes.
