Babayaro Defends Iwobi, Slams Critics Over Super Eagles Midfielder
Former Nigeria U23 goalkeeper Emmanuel Babayaro has come to the defence of Alex Iwobi, criticising those who have questioned the Fulham midfielder’s performances and commitment to the Super Eagles.
Babayaro believes Iwobi remains one of the key players in head coach Eric Chelle’s squad but is often underappreciated by fans and pundits alike. He revealed that he has heard “nasty” comments directed at the England-born midfielder, which he says are unfair and undeserved.
Speaking on the ATHLST podcast, Babayaro praised Iwobi’s display in Nigeria’s recent 2-1 victory over Tanzania, describing him as his Man of the Match.
“I have heard so many nasty things about this particular young man, talking about Iwobi, and I was fascinated,” Babayaro said. “In my book, he was my Man of the Match. Semi Ajayi was also worth it, but the goal gave it to him.
“Iwobi was the engine in that particular team, and I think he has not been treated fairly.”
Iwobi’s dedication to the national team has long been a topic of debate, with sections of the Super Eagles fanbase often accusing him of inconsistency or lack of passion. Despite these criticisms, his role in linking midfield to attack and driving the team’s tempo remains vital.
Opinion: Alex Iwobi’s situation reflects a broader issue in Nigerian football — creative midfielders are often judged only by goals and assists, rather than their overall influence on a game. Players like Iwobi do much of the unseen work, controlling rhythm, relieving pressure, and creating space for others to shine. While criticism is part of football, fairness matters. If performances like the one against Tanzania continue, perhaps it’s time fans begin to appreciate Iwobi not just for flashy moments, but for the balance and stability he brings to the Super Eagles.
