Super Falcons Maintain 36th Spot in Latest FIFA Ranking, Remain Africa’s Best
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have retained their 36th position in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings, solidifying their status as the highest-ranked team in Africa.
The ranking, released by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) on Thursday, marks the first update for 2025 and was published on FIFA’s official website.
Despite their 2-1 loss to Les Bleues of France in a friendly match last November, the nine-time African champions held on to their 1622 points, maintaining their dominance on the continent.
Nigeria Still Africa’s Best, But the Gap Is Closing
While Nigeria remains Africa’s number one, the competition is getting stiffer. South Africa, Morocco, Zambia, and Ghana complete the top five on the continent, showing how much African women’s football has grown in recent years.
Globally, USA continues to sit at the top of the rankings, with Spain, Germany, England, and Japan making up the top five.
The next FIFA Women’s World Ranking update will be published on June 12, 2025.
Opinion: Time for Super Falcons to Step Up?
While remaining Africa’s top team is a great achievement, the Super Falcons must aim higher. Their performance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup was impressive, but to break into the world’s top 20, they need to play and win more competitive matches against top-ranked nations.
The likes of South Africa and Morocco are catching up fast, proving that Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football is no longer guaranteed. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) must ensure the Falcons get quality friendlies and adequate preparations ahead of major tournaments.
What do you think? Can the Super Falcons break into the world’s top 20, or is their African dominance at risk?
