Femi Falana Intervenes in VeryDarkMan’s Detention Despite Legal Rift: A Testimony of Justice Over Sentiment
In a surprising yet commendable twist, renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has stepped into the controversial arrest and continued detention of outspoken social critic VeryDarkMan (VDM) by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The revelation was made by Deji Adeyanju, VDM’s lawyer, via a post on X (formerly Twitter), on Wednesday. Adeyanju noted that contrary to his earlier assumptions about Falana’s silence, the rights icon had made several calls to the EFCC, questioning the legality of VDM’s detention.
“I have now confirmed that contrary to my previous post the other day, our revered leader and mentor, Femi Falana, SAN, has made several calls to EFCC challenging VDM’s unlawful arrest and detention,” Adeyanju shared.
🔍 A Call for Justice, Not Emotion
Falana’s intervention is particularly striking given his family’s ongoing N1 billion defamation suit against VeryDarkMan. The suit stems from a leaked voice recording involving controversial personality Bobrisky, who alleged that musician Falz (Falana's son) tried to broker a presidential pardon through his father—for a fee.
Yet, in spite of this highly personal legal tension, Falana has chosen to uphold the tenets of justice, proving once again that the law must serve principle—not preference.
🗣️ Opinion: A Masterclass in Integrity and Democracy
Femi Falana's action is a textbook lesson in democratic responsibility. In a country where personal vendettas often overshadow public interest, Falana’s courage to defend VDM’s rights despite their dispute deserves resounding applause.
This case is more than just about VDM. It’s about freedom of speech, abuse of state power, and the right to due process. The EFCC must present concrete evidence of invitations or justify the arrest transparently.
🎯 Whether you agree with VDM’s methods or not, Nigeria must never become a place where dissent is silenced under vague pretenses. If the law doesn’t work for everyone—even the most controversial voices—it eventually works for no one.
⚖️ Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done—even when it’s inconvenient.
Do you think the EFCC should provide public proof of their claims or release VeryDarkMan immediately?
