“Silence Is Complicity” – Illbliss Calls Out Nigerian Celebrities for Ignoring Hardship and Insecurity

“Silence Is Complicity” – Illbliss Calls Out Nigerian Celebrities for Ignoring Hardship and Insecurity

Renowned rapper and social commentator Tobechukwu Melvin Ejiofor, popularly known as Illbliss, is not mincing words.

In a bold and thought-provoking appearance on The Real Shareholders podcast, the veteran rapper called out fellow Nigerian celebrities for remaining silent in the face of Nigeria’s deepening insecurity, hardship, and bad governance.

Illbliss noted that while a few artists—like Falz the Bahd Guy—have used their platforms to challenge the system, a significant portion of the entertainment industry has chosen silence, driven, he believes, by self-interest and political loyalty.

“There’s a huge percentage of the artistic industry that has basically turned their backs on what’s happening in Nigeria... Perhaps, they know that regardless of what you say, the government will do what it wants. Or they’re playing safe because the people in government are their godfathers,” he said.

He praised Falz’s bravery and artistic activism, citing the "Moral Instruction" album as a deeply introspective body of work that mirrored the state of the nation—even though it may not have achieved commercial success.

🗣️ Our Take: Where Are the Voices of Influence?

In a country where millions look up to celebrities for inspiration and leadership, silence in times of national crisis is dangerous. Illbliss is right to ask—where are the voices?

When entertainers cozy up to politicians for favors and appearances, or remain mute for fear of losing endorsements, it raises serious questions about responsibility versus relevance.

Art is powerful. Music is a voice. Influence is a gift. And when used right, these tools can shift narratives and spark change. The youth-led #EndSARS movement is proof that the power of voice and visibility can move mountains.

But today, many who once screamed "change" now whisper, or worse—say nothing at all.

We salute artists like Falz, Illbliss, and others who continue to speak truth to power. Nigeria needs more brave voices—more fire, more conscience, and fewer co-signs of silence.

💬 Do you think celebrities have a duty to speak up against bad governance, or should they just “focus on entertainment”? Let’s hear your take below.
