Michael Jackson’s Rhinestone Sock Sells for €7,688 After 28 Years
A rhinestone-covered sock once worn by Michael Jackson has fetched €7,688 (approximately $8,000 or ₦15 million) at an auction in Nîmes, France, on July 30, nearly doubling its expected value.
Originally estimated to sell for €3,000–€4,000, the sock was part of a backstage discovery made after Jackson’s 1997 HIStory World Tour performance in Nice. A stage technician found the item while dismantling equipment and preserved it in a framed display — where it remained untouched for 28 years.
🌟 A Glimpse Into Pop History
Though now faded to off-white with aging rhinestones, the sock is believed to have been worn during Jackson’s legendary “Billie Jean” performance — a song forever linked to his moonwalk and global superstardom.
The auction lot also included a backstage pass, adding to the item's authenticity and emotional value.
Auctioneer Aurore Illy called it a “cult object,” noting that while the sock showed visible wear and tear, it remains a symbol of unmatched pop culture history.
