Veteran Nollywood Actor Fabian Adibe Passes Away at 85

The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Fabian Adibe, who passed away at the age of 85.

Adibe, who rose to prominence for his remarkable role in the adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s classic novel “Things Fall Apart”, died in the early hours of Wednesday, at 2:30 am.

Celebrity journalist Seun Oloketuyi broke the news via his Instagram page, writing: “Things Fall Apart actor, Fabian Adibe, is dead. Died 2 am this morning.”

Adibe’s career spanned decades, during which he earned respect for his authenticity, cultural representation, and ability to bring stories rooted in African heritage to life.

Opinion

Fabian Adibe’s death is not just the passing of an actor—it is the end of a chapter in Nigeria’s cinematic history. He belonged to the generation of pioneers who carried Nollywood on their backs before it became the global powerhouse we know today. His role in Things Fall Apart was more than just acting; it was a cultural reawakening. He helped interpret one of Africa’s greatest literary works on screen, giving it life in a way that continues to resonate with audiences.

At a time when Nollywood was still finding its voice, Adibe and his peers gave the industry identity and credibility. He represented depth, discipline, and storytelling in its purest form.

His passing should remind us of the need to celebrate our living legends while they are here. Too often, we wait until the curtain falls before acknowledging their contributions. Nollywood, young actors, and fans alike owe him a debt of gratitude for laying the foundation of an industry that is now celebrated globally.

Fabian Adibe may be gone, but through his work, he remains alive in the collective memory of Africa and its art. His life teaches us that true legacies are not written in years but in the impact left behind.
