Jim Iyke Sparks Debate: Calls Modern Feminism “A Crime” and “Full of Double Standards”
Veteran Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has set social media abuzz after describing modern feminism as “a crime” that has strayed far from its original purpose.
Speaking in an interview with The EchoRoom, the 48-year-old actor praised the early feminist movement for tackling real issues such as patriarchy and gender imbalance, but insisted that the modern version has morphed into something far more divisive.
“I consider it a crime, a kind of assault,” Iyke said, claiming that modern feminism was first popularized by a women’s magazine as a clever sales strategy. “It allowed women to challenge the status quo and compete with men in the same space.”
According to him, this once noble cause has transformed into a mindset where “we do not need a man” has become a cultural standard, encouraging unnecessary competition between genders.
Iyke argued that while men and women have “distinct roles,” the beauty lies in working together in harmony, not in rivalry. He condemned what he called the movement’s “two-faced approach” and double standards, stressing that this imbalance is “what they are yet to understand.”
Opinion Corner – Where Does the Balance Lie?
Jim Iyke’s comments may sting for some and resonate for others, but they point to an undeniable truth: any ideology—no matter how noble at its birth—can be reshaped, exaggerated, and even misused over time.
Modern feminism, like many movements, is not a single story. For some women, it’s still about equality and opportunity; for others, it’s become a battle line drawn in the sand. Iyke’s take, whether you agree or not, challenges us to ask: has the pendulum swung too far from balance, and are we losing the harmony that true equality should bring?
One thing is clear—this conversation is far from over. And perhaps that’s the beauty (and the chaos) of cultural debates: they force us to confront the uncomfortable questions we might otherwise ignore.
