Meulensteen Backs Carrick or Mourinho as Potential Replacements for Amorim at Man United

Meulensteen Backs Carrick or Mourinho as Potential Replacements for Amorim at Man United

Former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen has suggested that Michael Carrick could be the “obvious option” to replace under-pressure boss Ruben Amorim.

Amorim, who has struggled to turn United’s fortunes around since taking over from Erik ten Hag, is facing mounting speculation about his future after a poor run of results.

Speaking to BetVictor (via Metro), Meulensteen argued that Carrick’s familiarity with Old Trafford could make him a suitable candidate if the Portuguese manager is dismissed.

“Michael Carrick might be the obvious option if Ruben Amorim is to go,” Meulensteen said. “Obviously Michael still knows quite a few players that were there when he was there. So he’s still got some good inside information. He obviously knows the club. He knows what’s expected from the club.”

Carrick previously served as interim manager at United before moving to Middlesbrough, where he spent three seasons. He was sacked in June after leading the Championship side to a 10th-place finish last season.

Meulensteen also name-dropped Jose Mourinho as another possible candidate for a dramatic return to Old Trafford. The Portuguese tactician, who won the Europa League and League Cup during his previous stint at United, is currently out of work.

Opinion: A Club Still Living in the Past?

Meulensteen’s comments highlight Manchester United’s ongoing dilemma—whether to turn to the familiar or take a bold step forward. Carrick represents continuity, a former player and coach who understands the culture of Old Trafford, but his managerial CV is still modest. Mourinho, meanwhile, brings a glittering résumé and a proven ability to win trophies, yet his return could be seen as recycling the past rather than building for the future.

The real question for United isn’t just who should replace Amorim if he leaves—it’s about what kind of identity the club truly wants. Do they want a youthful manager like Carrick, who could grow with the squad and instill long-term vision? Or a serial winner like Mourinho, who could provide immediate stability but perhaps little lasting foundation?

Until United define that vision, names will continue to be thrown around, and the club risks repeating the cycle that has haunted them since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. For now, Carrick and Mourinho may sound appealing, but the deeper problem at Old Trafford is not just the man in the dugout—it’s the direction of the club itself.
