Actress Eniola Ajao secures justice after blogger’s defamatory video goes viral

Actress Eniola Ajao secures justice after blogger’s defamatory video goes viral

Nollywood actress, Eniola Ajao, has opened up about the legal steps she took against a blogger who shared a misleading video of her, recorded during the funeral of fellow actor Odunlade Adekola’s father.

The video, which went viral, sparked a wave of online criticism after viewers misinterpreted her body language. Some accused her of being “distracted” or “strange” during the solemn event. Ajao later clarified that the clip had been edited in a way that damaged her reputation, prompting her to pursue the matter legally.

The blogger, identified as Adabasioni Oluwafemi Aseoro, was arrested, prosecuted for defamation under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws, and held at Ikoyi Prison for two weeks before issuing an apology.

In a statement, Ajao revealed she chose to forgive him after his remorseful plea—considering his family—but warned others that online defamation is no joke.

“He assassinated my character, he paid for it in full… If you think you can defame people online because it’s a free space, you will meet the course of the law. Your seven years imprisonment is loading,” she wrote.

She also expressed gratitude to CSP Mariam Ogunmolasuyi and activist Aghedo Stephen for their support during the process.

Opinion:
This case is more than just Nollywood drama—it’s a powerful reminder of how quickly misinformation spreads in today’s digital world. With just a few clicks, a misleading video can tarnish reputations, stir gossip, and put livelihoods at risk.

Eniola Ajao’s decision to pursue justice sends a strong message: freedom of expression online does not equal freedom from accountability. For too long, some bloggers and social media users have hidden behind their screens, creating damaging narratives for clout and clicks. But the law is catching up.

At the same time, Ajao’s choice to forgive—despite having the legal upper hand—shows a balance of firmness and grace. It highlights the importance of teaching lessons without completely destroying lives.

Ultimately, this story is a wake-up call for all of us, both creators and consumers of online content: verify before you vilify. In a world where one edited video can ruin a career, responsible storytelling and digital empathy are more necessary than ever.
