AFCON 2025: Super Eagles, Morocco Set for Extra-Time Drama After Goalless Semi-Final Stalemate

AFCON 2025: Super Eagles, Morocco Set for Extra-Time Drama After Goalless Semi-Final Stalemate

Nigeria and hosts Morocco are heading into extra time after playing out a tense 0–0 draw in their Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash on Wednesday night in Rabat.

Both sides came into the encounter unbeaten in the tournament, and that resilience was clearly on display at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, where neither team was able to break the deadlock after 90 minutes of competitive football.

The Super Eagles, who booked their semi-final spot with a convincing 2–0 victory over Algeria, lined up with Stanley Nwabali in goal, marshalled by a defence that included Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey and Bruno Onyamaechi. Victor Osimhen captained the side, supported in attack by Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams.

Morocco, also fresh from a 2–0 win against Cameroon, started with experienced shot-stopper Yassine Bounou in goal, while the likes of Achraf Hakimi, Nayef Aguerd, Brahim Diaz and Youssef En-Nesyri (El Kaabi) looked to give the hosts an edge.

The first half was evenly contested, although Morocco enjoyed slightly more possession and attacking moments. Nigeria, however, remained disciplined and compact, limiting clear-cut chances and ensuring the game stayed goalless at the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams pushing for a breakthrough but finding it difficult to penetrate well-organised defences. Despite moments of pressure and flashes of individual brilliance, neither side could find the decisive goal before the final whistle.

With the score still 0–0 at full time, the match has now moved into extra time, as both teams continue their quest to book a place in Sunday’s final against Senegal.

Opinion: A Battle of Nerves, Not Goals

This semi-final has been a true test of character rather than flair. While Morocco may have looked slightly more adventurous, Nigeria’s composure and defensive discipline have once again proven why the Super Eagles remain one of the most difficult teams to break down at AFCON 2025.

Extra time now shifts the contest from tactics to mentality. Fatigue, concentration, and belief will likely decide the outcome. Nigeria’s experience in high-pressure moments, combined with Osimhen’s leadership and the team’s strong defensive core, could become the difference if the game stretches further.

As the clock ticks on in Rabat, one thing is certain: this is the kind of night that defines tournaments and creates heroes. Whether it ends in extra-time drama or the tension of penalties, fans can expect a gripping finish to an already absorbing semi-final.
