Seun Kuti Dismisses Clout-Chasing Allegations Amid Wizkid Criticism

Seun Kuti Dismisses Clout-Chasing Allegations Amid Wizkid Criticism

Maverick Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has dismissed claims that he is leveraging Wizkid’s name for publicity or to “revive” his career. The accusations arose after Kuti repeatedly criticised the Starboy boss and his fans during recent livestreams.

Speaking during one of his livestreams, Kuti rejected the idea that he needs Wizkid to boost his profile. “Some people are saying I am trying to use Wizkid to revive my career. When did my career die for me to be trying to revive it? Last year alone, I did 82 shows globally,” he stated. He added that he sold out concerts in Australia, Europe, America, and Brazil, affirming his continued relevance in the global music scene.

Kuti also explained the inspiration behind his nickname, Big Bird, saying, “I call myself Big Bird because the sky is big for everybody. Because no matter how big you are, you can’t occupy the whole sky. People whose careers need revival know themselves. It is not me.”

Opinion: Confidence and Clarity in a Competitive Industry

Seun Kuti’s response reflects not just confidence but also a reminder that artistic value isn’t measured by comparisons. In an era where Afrobeat artists are frequently pitted against one another, Kuti’s stance highlights that global reach and consistency speak louder than social media chatter.

While some may interpret his criticisms of Wizkid as provocative, Kuti’s success—evident in sold-out international shows—proves that a musician’s relevance is earned through craft, performance, and dedication, not clout-chasing. His words also serve as advice to younger artists: focus on your own growth rather than measuring yourself against peers.
