Police Arrest Suspect as Investigation Deepens into Destiny Boy’s Deat

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the death of fast-rising Nigerian singer Adesina Afeez, popularly known as Destiny Boy. The police also disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for a thorough and detailed investigation.

In a statement obtained on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, said investigations had begun immediately after the incident was reported.

“The Ogun State Police Command has since commenced investigations into the death of Adesina Afeez, aged 22 years, popularly known as Destiny Boy.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for detailed investigation. One suspect is currently in custody while investigations are ongoing,” the statement read.

News of Destiny Boy’s death broke on Sunday and quickly spread across social media, triggering an outpouring of grief from fans, colleagues and members of the entertainment industry. The circulation of distressing videos showing the singer being conveyed to a mortuary also sparked intense speculation about the circumstances surrounding his passing.

In response to the growing rumours, an unidentified associate of the late singer released a video urging the public to avoid jumping to conclusions. According to him, Destiny Boy had been battling a private health challenge before his death.

“Destiny was nursing a health issue in his body before he died. We tried for him, but he didn’t make it,” the associate said, while calling for prayers and understanding.

Born Afeez Adeshina, Destiny Boy carved a unique space for himself in the Nigerian music scene with his Fuji-infused sound. He began his journey at T2 Boys Studios in Agege and worked as a backup dancer for Fuji legend Pasuma before stepping into the spotlight.

His breakthrough came in 2019 after he released a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song If, which went viral and endeared him to a young audience. He followed it up with covers of songs by Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice and Small Doctor, before dropping original tracks such as Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan and Lowkey.

Tragically, Destiny Boy’s death comes just months after he welcomed his first child with his partner, Iremide, in November 2024.
