Michael Owen Backs Arsenal for Title Despite Shock Home Defeat to Man United

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen has insisted that Arsenal remain favourites to win the Premier League title, despite their painful 3–2 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

The loss at the Emirates Stadium denied Mikel Arteta’s side the chance to stretch their lead at the top of the table to seven points. Instead, Arsenal now sit four points clear of Manchester City, who occupy second place and are firmly back in the title conversation.

United produced a stunning performance in North London, with Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha all finding the net for Michael Carrick’s side to hand the Gunners a rare home defeat this season.

Reacting after the game, Owen was quick to defend Arsenal’s overall display, insisting the result did not reflect a collapse in quality.

“Arsenal did not defend horrifically at all,” Owen said, as quoted by Metro UK.
“There were two unbelievable goals. Obviously, they will think they could have avoided the first goal, but it is just amazing, isn’t it?

“I still think Arsenal will go on and win the league, but that is a real statement from Manchester United.”

Opinion: A Bump in the Road, Not a Title Collapse

Arsenal’s defeat may feel costly, but it is far from season-defining. Matches like this often happen in title races — moments where brilliance from opponents outweighs tactical discipline. United didn’t just win; they announced themselves, and Owen’s words reflect that reality.

What matters most for Arsenal is their response. With a four-point cushion still intact and consistency on their side, the Gunners remain in control of their destiny. More importantly, losses like this can sharpen focus rather than derail momentum.

For Manchester United, this was more than three points — it was a statement of belief. For Arsenal, it’s a reminder that champions are not defined by perfection, but by how they react when things go wrong.

If Arteta’s men learn the right lessons from this defeat, Owen’s prediction may yet prove accurate. The title race is alive — but Arsenal still have the upper hand.
