Veteran Actor Jide Kosoko Named Oloja of Lagos-Elect by King Kosoko Royal Family

Nollywood veteran Jide Kosoko has been selected as the Oloja of Lagos-elect, the traditional ruler of Lagos Island, in a ceremony held at the King Kosoko Palace in Ereko, Lagos Island. The announcement was made on Monday in the presence of members of the royal family.

The formal presentation was led by Mutiat Ali-Balogun, Olori Ebi General of the King Kosoko Royal Family, who raised the hand of Kosoko’s daughter to signify the family’s endorsement. She was joined by Oyindamola Ayepola, Deputy Olori Ebi General and head of the Meshimo Ruling House.

According to palace officials, the selection followed the customs and laws guiding the succession of the Oloja of Lagos. The stool has been vacant since the passing of Adebola Ige on December 23, 2017, and a 16-member committee was tasked with managing the succession process.

In October 2020, eligible princes from the Akinsanya Olojo Kosoko Ruling House were invited for screening, with four princes participating. After careful deliberation, the committee determined that Kosoko was the most suitable candidate in line with tradition, the Lagos State Obas and Chiefs Law, and the 1983 Registered Declaration on succession.

The ruling house has since approached the Lagos State Government for approval, with the next step being the traditional installation and capping ceremony, expected to be performed by Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu, in accordance with palace customs.
