“We Deserved to Lose” — Mbappé Slams Real Madrid’s Inconsistency After Benfica Defeat

“We Deserved to Lose” — Mbappé Slams Real Madrid’s Inconsistency After Benfica Defeat

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has delivered a brutally honest assessment of himself and his teammates following their 4–2 UEFA Champions League defeat to Benfica on Wednesday night.

Despite scoring twice in the encounter, Mbappé admitted that Real Madrid were second-best on the night and fully deserved the loss against José Mourinho’s Benfica.

“We deserved to lose. It was not a good performance. We are too inconsistent,” Mbappé said after the match, as quoted by football journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The French star did not hold back, stressing that Madrid’s up-and-down performances are unworthy of a club with championship ambitions.

“We can’t keep being this inconsistent. We can’t keep doing this day on, day off thing — it’s not what champions do,” he added.

Benfica’s dominant display at home exposed Madrid’s defensive lapses and lack of control, making Mbappé’s brace little more than consolation goals on a disappointing night for the Spanish giants.

Real Madrid will now turn their attention to LaLiga, where they face Rayo Vallecano this weekend, with Mbappé hoping to inspire a quick response from the team.

Opinion: A Leader’s Words, Not Just a Star’s Goals

Mbappé’s comments go beyond frustration — they reflect leadership. It’s easy for a player who scored twice to hide behind individual brilliance, but Mbappé chose accountability instead, pointing to a deeper issue within the squad.

Real Madrid’s biggest problem this season hasn’t been talent; it has been consistency. Nights of dominance are followed by lapses in intensity, structure, and focus — exactly the kind of flaw elite European sides are quick to punish.

What makes Mbappé’s reaction refreshing is its honesty. Champions are not defined by perfect seasons, but by how they respond to failure. His words may sting, but they could also be the wake-up call Madrid need.

If Real Madrid are to remain genuine contenders in Europe, they must match their star power with discipline and hunger — every game, not just on the big nights.

For now, Mbappé has done his part: he scored, he spoke up, and he took responsibility. The response against Rayo Vallecano will show whether the rest of the team is ready to listen.
