Gary Lineker Backs Arsenal for Champions League Glory
England football legend Gary Lineker has thrown his weight behind Arsenal, tipping the Gunners to win the UEFA Champions League this season and naming them clear favourites in the Premier League race.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker praised Mikel Arteta’s side for their exceptional organisation, defensive solidity, and deadly efficiency from set pieces — qualities he believes set them apart from every other team in Europe.
According to Lineker, Arsenal’s strength lies not just in how well they score, but in how difficult they are to break down.
“Yes, I would [back them], for a reason. They’re really hard to score against. They are very organized and will hurt you through a set play. Right now, I don’t think many European teams can handle their set pieces very well,” he said.
While some critics argue Arsenal’s style isn’t always the most entertaining, Lineker dismissed that narrative, pointing out that their dominance often forces opponents into defensive, low-block setups.
“People say it’s not great to watch, but mostly because teams play low against them. They might look nicer sometimes, but good grief, look at where they are now. They’re clear in both competitions.”
Arsenal’s Numbers Tell the Story
Arsenal’s Champions League campaign has been nothing short of outstanding. The North London club conceded just four goals in eight matches, with two of those coming in their final group-stage game against FC Kairat.
Even more impressive, Arsenal finished the league stage as the only team with a perfect record, winning all eight of their matches — a clear statement of intent on the European stage.
Opinion: Arsenal Look Built for Europe
Lineker’s assessment feels spot-on. This Arsenal side may not always dazzle with flair, but they play with the kind of control, discipline, and efficiency that wins major tournaments. Their mastery of set pieces has become a genuine weapon, while their defensive structure makes them one of the hardest teams in Europe to face over two legs.
Champions League success often belongs to teams that can suffer, stay compact, and punish mistakes — and Arteta’s Arsenal tick all those boxes. If they maintain this balance and handle the pressure of the knockout stages, this could finally be the season the Gunners lift Europe’s biggest prize for the first time.
For Arsenal fans, belief is no longer wishful thinking — it’s backed by performances, statistics, and now, the backing of one of England’s most respected football voices.
