AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Boycott Travel Over Unpaid Bonuses Ahead of Algeria Clash

AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Boycott Travel Over Unpaid Bonuses Ahead of Algeria Clash

The Super Eagles’ preparations for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final showdown against Algeria have been thrown into uncertainty following reports that players and coaches have refused to travel to Marrakech over unpaid bonuses.

According to BBC Africa journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, who is currently in Morocco, the Nigerian contingent has halted movement and training in protest over outstanding match bonuses.

Nigeria, who are scheduled to face Algeria on Saturday evening, are yet to receive bonuses for the four matches already played at the tournament. Eric Chelle’s side recorded impressive victories against Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda in the group stage, before delivering a commanding 4-0 win over Mozambique in the Round of 16.

Sources indicate that the players and technical crew have collectively decided not to travel or resume training until the issue is fully resolved.

Opinion: A Familiar AFCON Distraction Nigeria Must Outgrow

Sadly, this situation feels like déjà vu. Time and again, Nigerian teams heading into crucial tournaments or knockout matches are distracted by administrative issues rather than football. It is particularly painful because this Super Eagles squad has shown unity, hunger, and top-level performance on the pitch.

Bonuses are not gifts — they are agreements. When players deliver results and uphold the nation’s pride, timely fulfillment of promises should never be a debate. Moments like this risk undoing hard work, breaking momentum, and handing psychological advantage to opponents.

As Nigeria prepares to face a disciplined Algerian side, one can only hope that authorities act swiftly. AFCON titles are not won on talent alone; they require stability, trust, and respect behind the scenes.

The Super Eagles have done their part on the pitch. Now, the ball is firmly in the hands of the administrators.
