NWFL Slams Ibom Angels with ₦2.5m Fine, Stadium Ban Over Crowd Violence

NWFL Slams Ibom Angels with ₦2.5m Fine, Stadium Ban Over Crowd Violence

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has taken firm disciplinary action against Ibom Angels following crowd violence that marred their Matchday Five encounter against Bayelsa Queens at the Uyo Township Stadium.

According to reports, supporters of Ibom Angels unlawfully invaded the pitch at the end of the match and physically attacked players and officials of Bayelsa Queens, sparking widespread condemnation. The incident occurred on Wednesday and raised serious concerns about safety and sportsmanship in the women’s league.

In response, the NWFL fined Ibom Angels ₦2.5 million and imposed a ban on their supporters from attending the club’s next three home matches. The league’s Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the sanctions reflect the NWFL’s zero-tolerance stance on violence.

“The safety of players, officials and match personnel is non-negotiable,” Shabi stated. “What occurred in Uyo represents a serious breach of our regulations and the values of the NWFL. We will take stiffer actions against any club whose supporters engage in violence or conduct capable of bringing the league into disrepute.”

Opinion: The NWFL’s swift and decisive response sends a strong message that violence has no place in Nigerian football — especially in a league striving for growth, respect, and global recognition. While passion is an integral part of the game, it must never cross into lawlessness or endanger lives.

This incident is also a reminder that clubs bear responsibility not just for performances on the pitch but for the behavior of their supporters. Enforcing strict sanctions is necessary to protect players and officials, and to preserve the integrity of the league. If Nigerian women’s football is to continue its upward trajectory, discipline, safety, and accountability must remain non-negotiable.
