Lineker Slams Mourinho Over Vinicius Comments After Champions League Clash

Lineker Slams Mourinho Over Vinicius Comments After Champions League Clash

Former Barcelona striker Gary Lineker has strongly criticised José Mourinho over remarks he made about Vinícius Júnior following the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 playoff first-leg encounter between Benfica and Real Madrid.

The controversy emerged after Mourinho suggested that Vinicius’ goal celebration in front of the Benfica supporters provoked the alleged racial insult from Benfica youngster Gianluca Prestianni. His comments quickly drew criticism from sections of the football community.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Lineker did not hide his disappointment, describing Mourinho’s remarks as troubling and divisive.

“The post-match tribalism after the Benfica game was depressing. José Mourinho had the gall to blame Vinicius for celebrating his goal, basically saying he had it coming. I’m sorry, but that is gaslighting.
This is not about tribalism; it is a moment that calls for unity in football, not division,” Lineker said.

Opinion: Football Must Stand Above Blame Culture

Incidents involving alleged racism in football are always sensitive, and reactions from influential figures carry enormous weight. Mourinho’s comments — whether intended to provoke debate or defend his perspective — risk shifting focus away from the core issue: respect and accountability in the sport.

Lineker’s response highlights an important truth. Celebrating a goal is part of football’s emotion and theatre; it should never be used to justify abuse of any kind. When prominent voices appear to blame the victim, it can unintentionally normalise harmful narratives and weaken the collective fight against discrimination.

More broadly, football thrives when rivalry remains competitive but respectful. Moments like this should unite clubs, fans, and pundits in condemning unacceptable behaviour rather than deepening divisions.

Ultimately, the conversation sparked by this clash may serve a positive purpose if it pushes the football world toward clearer standards — where passion is celebrated, but dignity is never compromised.
