Sanyeri Opens Up on Education Regret and Journey to Stardom

Sanyeri Opens Up on Education Regret and Journey to Stardom

Popular Nollywood actor Olaniyi Afonja, widely known as Sanyeri, has shared candid reflections about his educational background and early experiences in the Nigerian film industry.

Speaking during an interview on Behind The Fame which aired on Saturday, February 28, 2026, the comic star revealed that as a child, he misunderstood the value of education. According to him, he once believed schooling was something done mainly to satisfy parents, not realizing it was an investment in his own future.

“When children are in school, they think education is for their parents, not realizing it is for their own future. Back then, it felt like punishment,” he said.

The actor admitted that he now regrets not advancing his education earlier in life. However, he disclosed that he has taken steps to return to school and is awaiting the outcome of his recent efforts. Emphasizing that learning has no age limit, Sanyeri encouraged people to pursue education at any stage of life.

Beyond academics, Sanyeri also reflected on his acting career. Contrary to public perception, he revealed that comedy was not his original path in Nollywood. He performed various roles before eventually becoming known for his humorous characters.

He credited his early development to two mentors: the late Prince Oluseyi Adeoye and Hakeem Alimi Ajala Jalingo. According to him, although neither mentor specialized in comedy, they played a significant role in shaping his craft and guiding him in the industry.

Sanyeri also shared the story behind his stage name. He explained that “Sanyeri” was originally the identity of another stage performer. When the original actor fell ill and a replacement was needed, his boss selected him to take over the role. That opportunity proved pivotal, and over time, the name became permanently associated with him. He added that the name carries deeper traditional praise meanings beyond its stage identity.

Opinion: Growth, Regret, and Reinvention

Sanyeri’s story is both humbling and inspiring. His honesty about regretting missed educational opportunities reflects a reality many people silently carry. Childhood perceptions often differ from adult understanding, and it takes courage to admit that one could have done better.

What stands out most is not the regret — but the decision to act. Returning to education later in life sends a powerful message that self-improvement has no deadline. In a society where many feel it is “too late” to start over, his journey challenges that belief.

Equally compelling is the reminder that careers are rarely straightforward. Sanyeri did not begin as a comedian; he evolved into one. His success came through mentorship, opportunity, and adaptability. It shows that talent sometimes finds its direction through unexpected paths.

For young people watching his journey, the lesson is clear: education matters, mentorship matters, and growth never stops. Whether in school or in life, it is never too late to rewrite your story.
